- Crack sealing is used as a defense against pavement deterioration. It offers several significant benefits; such as keeping water from entering and weakening and causing less segregation to the base or sub-base. This contributes to helping to preserve the pavement adjacent to the cracks from debris from intruding into open cracks causing compressive stresses. Therefore extending pavement life by minimizing crack growth.

PROCEDURES

- An operator uses a pavement crack router which routes out the crack with carbine tipped cutter blades over the crack, and creates a reservoir into the crack.

- Once the route is complete, we clean out all loose debris, and dry out the moister in the cracks with a hot air lance. For best results, the hot air lance provides a flame and a high velocity compressed hot air generating temperatures in excess of 200 degrees Fahrenheit for faster and thorough drying.

- If a crack is dry and has no moisture, cold compressed air is sufficient. The sealant must have a clean, dry bonding surface.

- Hot pour sealants are effectively applied by using a hydraulic pumping wand or by manual pouring cones. The material is distributed from a melting kettle, the types of melters are known as “Oil jacketed” melters or double boilers. These materials are commonly applied at 375 degrees F. The sealant is then applied flush to the surface of the pavement.

OVERBANDING SEALANT

- Another method of sealant application is over banding the crack, when the width of the crack is wide, routing is not necessary; therefore the sealant is placed on a un-routed crack. The sealant can be shaped into a band over the rack using a rubber blade squeegee that flattens the sealant over the crack.
